About the artwork

Exploring various historical sites across the North Island was a significant part of my childhood, thanks to my parents. Listening to the stories behind these locations often sparked my imagination as I tried to step into the shoes of those involved. Every place has a tale to tell, and Te Arai is no exception; it served as a landing point and shelter for Māori voyagers from Polynesia in the 1300s. It's hard to imagine what a journey like that must have been like. When they arrived, I wonder if they sat up on the rocks and looked down at the beautiful blue water like I did.
